Chicago Tribune PR. The metro daily where a regional story carries further than a national one.

The Tribune is one of the last major metro dailies with a full newsroom, and it rewards a kind of story the national business press will not run: something that matters specifically here. This is an account of which desks take pitches, why the local angle is the lever rather than a limitation, and what has to be in place before an approach is worth making.

Why a metro daily is worth targeting

National business press evaluates a story on whether it matters to a national reader. That test excludes most regional companies, practices, and firms no matter how substantial they are. A metro daily applies a different test: does this matter to people here. For a great many businesses that is a test they can actually pass, and passing it produces a piece of staff-reported journalism at a publication with real editorial standards.

The second reason is downstream. Metro daily coverage is indexed, syndicated, and read by the trade press, and it is frequently the first independent source a national reporter finds when checking whether a story has been reported before. A Tribune piece is often what makes a later national pitch credible rather than speculative.

Which desks take pitches

Business covers the regional economy, employers, real estate, and the companies headquartered or expanding in the metro. Health covers hospital systems, practices, and public health. The metro and breaking news desks cover developments as they happen and need local voices for reaction, often within the same day. Features and Life cover their categories on longer lead times.

As with any newsroom, pitches belong to individual reporters rather than to the publication. The work of identifying who covers your category, reading what they have filed recently, and pitching an angle that fits their beat is the work. A pitch to a general newsroom address has no owner and no advocate.

What makes a story local rather than merely located here

The distinction that decides most Tribune pitches is whether the local element is the story or just the address. A company being headquartered in Chicago is an address. A company changing how a category operates in Chicago, employing people here at scale, responding to a regulation that lands here first, or serving a population the paper covers is a story.

The strongest pattern is a local instance of a national development. When something is moving nationally and a reporter needs a concrete example, a firm or practice that can be that example, with data and a named person available to speak, is doing the reporter’s hardest work for them. That is the highest-conversion approach at any metro daily.

Speed matters more here than at a national weekly. Metro desks work on daily cycles, so a spokesperson who needs several days of internal approval will miss most of the available inventory. The pre-clearance approach we use for regulated clients is described on the law firm and medical practice pages.

How we approach it

We treat the Tribune as a named target where the story has genuine regional weight, and we say so plainly when it does not. The preparation is the same discipline we bring to any desk: establish whether the local significance is real, build the data or access that makes it reportable, prepare a spokesperson who can talk to a beat reporter on a daily cycle, and document the target, the timeline, and the remedy in the engagement letter before work begins.

For clients based in the metro, the Tribune usually sits alongside regional trade press and national targets in a single plan. That structure is described on the Chicago PR page and in the digital and print PR practice.
